GHG Verification

CoZero is a SANAS (South African National Accreditation System) accredited GHG (greenhouse gas) Verification Body.

The verification of the GHG inventory, carbon reduction project or product footprint is performed in accordance with the ISO 14064:3 standard.
A reasonable or limited level of assurance can be provided that the inventory has been developed according to the ISO 14064:1 standard.
The verification of your organisation’s GHG inventory is done according to international standards, which gives you the assurance that your GHG performance is measured and comparable anywhere, whether it be Europe, North or South America, Asia or Africa.

Carbon Tax

What is Carbon Tax?

It is a tax aimed at businesses and organisations that emit a high level of GHGs, thereby polluting the atmosphere. Industries that rely on fuel consumption and electricity generation are the most frequent offenders.

The Carbon Tax Policy Paper, titled “Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Facilitating the Transition to a Green Economy”, will be implemented by the National Treasury. The South African government has indicated that a tax will be imposed on carbon emissions from 1 January 2019. This has been done in a move to alleviate the country’s contribution to climate change and its commitment to the Paris Agreement

What is the Paris Agreement?*

The Paris Agreement is universally regarded as a seminal point in the development of the international climate change regime under the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). The Agreement is a comprehensive framework which will guide international efforts to limit greenhouse gas emissions and to meet all the associated challenges posed by climate change.

It signals the change in pace towards the low carbon development from 2020 onwards through commitments of countries in ambitious national plans called Nationally Determined Contributions. This outcome recognises that climate change represents an urgent threat to human societies and the planet, requiring the widest possible cooperation by all countries and other stakeholders.

The main objective of the Agreement is to limit the global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees Celsius, while pursuing efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees. The recognition of the 1.5 degree target is of central importance to South Africa as an African and developing country that is highly vulnerable to climate change. The Paris Agreement is also an important tool in mobilising finance, technological support and capacity building for developing countries, and will also help to scale up global efforts to address and minimise loss and damage from climate change and increase climate resilience.

Signing the Agreement requires that countries will later need to adopt the agreement within their own legal systems, through ratification, acceptance, approval or accession.

*The agreement will enter into force when ratified by at least 55 countries, which together represent at least 55% of global emissions.

Why is this important for your organisation?

It is important for organisations to understand their current carbon footprint and the possible tax implications it might have. South African companies should now begin to consider the impact on their operations and investments. A proper measurement and carbon reporting system should be implemented, and ways to effectively mitigate the effects of the carbon tax on their organisations and operations should be identified.

How CoZero can assist?

CoZero can assist your organisation by doing a verification of your carbon inventory and an analysis of your carbon tax liabilities, as per the current suggested Carbon Tax Proposal from the National Treasury.
Once the carbon inventory has been verified, the organisation has a clear view of the possible tax implications and will enable companies to identify carbon reduction projects. It will also highlight areas where actions and processes need to be implemented to address carbon emission sources in terms of data collection, monitoring and reporting.

Training and Awareness

CoZero provides classroom training on courses that are developed and based on ISO 14064, the only internationally accepted standard, as well as the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) protocol.

All courses have been developed by carbon emissions experts, in partnership with Carbon Action, Ireland. The following courses are available:
• Carbon Awareness
• Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management
• Measurement
• Risks
• Reporting
• Carbon footprint development
• Carbon Measurement
• Carbon Reduction Projects

Interim Verification Assessment

CoZero can do an interim verification/assessment for your company on the current GHG status and issue a report that can be used as a baseline and assist your company to determine whether the verification comply to a reasonable or limited level of assurance under the ISO 14064:1 standard.
